Students at Beni Suef University Develop Artificial Intelligence System to Support Medical Decisions in Intensive Care Units
A team of students from the Faculty of Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence at Beni Suef University successfully developed a graduation project titled Cortexia, an intelligent Clinical Decision Support System (CDS) designed for intensive care units (ICUs). The system aims to help medical teams access medical information more quickly, organize patient data, and reduce the likelihood of errors resulting from work pressures within critical care settings.
The system combines patient data management and real-time vital signs monitoring, along with issuing alerts for critical cases based on News Score. It also includes an intelligent assistant that utilizes artificial intelligence and Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) technologies to answer medical questions based on reliable references and treatment protocols, displaying the sources used for each answer. The system also provides tools for managing patient medical records, tracking medications, fluid balance, medical reports, and radiology, all on a single platform that facilitates access to critical information during critical care.
The team members emphasized that the system does not replace the physician but rather acts as an intelligent assistant supporting clinical decision-making by providing evidence-based recommendations and adherence to medical protocols, while the final decision remains with the medical team.
The team indicated that the current version focuses on supporting clinical decision-making and managing intensive care patients, while future development plans include adding models for early prediction of patient deterioration using artificial intelligence technologies.
